Castle Lodge Abridged
West Lodge, Mauldslie Castle, Carluke, South Lanarkshire ML8 5QD
Copyright: Mauldslie Castle Website
One of our Bulletin crew know this picturesque building and says it is sublime. Inside and outside. Lots of character. A finely built bridge in a similar vernacular to this castle lodge affords the castle lodge an impressive road towards the property, not unlike the bridge at Queen Elizabeth’s home at Balmoral. Here at Mauldslie Castle West Lodge there is an exclusive view of the River Clyde. Also there is a nice piece about the West Lodge on the main Mauldslie Castle website:-

Detached Church of Character
South Chapel, Ashlands Road, Ilkley, LS29 8JT
By popular email demand we are listing a nice church building for sale in this edition. The price sought for this substantial detached former chapel is surprisingly modest for the exquisite masonry in this construction. Current planning permission has been given for office and storage. It is of course up to potential purchasers to exercise proper due diligence to establish the likelihood of any planning permission for residential conversion usage. However this is a very nice looking building and at the price may be the start of an interesting home conversion project.

Futuro Building Wanted
For A Cash Buyer
Futuro House Design (c) 2014 Sebastian F-SW
This element to the current Unique Property Bulletin is a little unusual as we normally list property for sale. But following the episode of George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces Futuro programme on UK television recently…
Futuro House Rebuild Project – Click Here
… one of our readers has asked if we can see if there are any of the owners of these Futuro houses willing to sell thie example of this amazing piece of architecture?
Originally designed by Matti Suuronen, approximately 100 were built in a prefabricated form. Manufactured in Finland. Once assembled this unique style of home measures around 13 feet high and 26 feet in diameter.
Matti Suuronen designed them as a ski cabin that would be “quick to heat and easy to construct in rough terrain.” The result was a universally transportable home.
To this end our buyer has indicated that they are happy to look at any remaining Futuro unit in any condition and from any part of the world.
If you have one of these Futuro Homes you would like to sell, please get in touch:-

Unique Property Competition
For this November + December month, the Unique Property Bulletin competition prize is:-
Balmoral Castle On A Note
This Is Our Modest Prize. Unless Requested, Payment Will Be Made By Cheque.
Competition Hint
“Lookout, The North Sea”
Can You Name This Unique Property ?
The first correct entry for the name of unique property – out of the hat – wins the prize.
PLEASE NOTE: The prize is NOT the building, just the £100. Sorry we haven’t reached the level of prize value that enables real buildings to be awarded to winners. Yet!
For our competition last month we found such an obscure unique building, we reckoned nobody would manage a correct answer and our prize fund was relatively safe. Should have known better. We have a lot of very good property sleuths reading the Bulletin. Nine correct answers came in. What an impressive array of unique property hunters out there.
So this time we are throwing down the unique gauntlet. We are running this competition for two months duration [November and December] so we can double the prize fund to £100. But we are also putting a property to identify which we think nobody will manage to guess.
So over to you.
Best wishes and good luck from the Unique Property Bulletin Team
Free to enter. Just let us know have your competition answer by 31st December 2014. Email free entries to:-

Subterranean Trilogy
Former Water Reservoir For Sale
“As Is”: Former Water Reservoir, Bere Alston, Devon PL20 7EE
For some reason many, many of our readers respond to subterranean structures. We have yet to figure out why. For this edition, we have a selection to pick from. Three for sale and one for inspiration. The latter to show that a good architect and receptive planning authority can secure that all important planning permission that resulted in last Unique Property Bulletin edition’s completed semi-subterranean wonder at Steppingstone. With this next listing we have a former reservoir structure at Bere Alston in Devon and some great potential:-
“Guide Drawing”: Former Water Reservoir, Bere Alston, Devon PL20 7EE
To help readers who emailed in after that particular listing, we have the raw candidate property that may have another semi-subterranean wonder of a home lurking within the empty reservoir tank. The proposed plans are for conversion into a large single storey, four / five bedroom dwelling with study, large gym, extra large double garage and various private courtyards. Most of the receptions and bedrooms are orientated southwards to make the most of the light and views over the adjoining field.

Semi Subterranea Water Tank
Site With Potential – For Sale By Auction
Amilaird, Near Fenwick, East Ayrshire, KA3 6JG
Copyright Space Six Architects Ltd
This former water tank has been granted planning permission – almost by local acclaim. Indeed one representation from the parish council supported the endeavour asking if it was to be featured on grand Designs! This truly unique and inspirational concept to re-purpose an old brownfield site to a very interesting place to live is for sale at SVA Auctions.
Auctioneer’s Narrative: A corner site with a large concrete water tank which occupies roughly a third of the property. The tank is circular and extends to 460 sq.m approx with a domed roof and internal volume of approximately 2.5 Million litres. The tank is largely below ground. The site is surrounded by a post and wire fence around two metres in height with pedestrian access gates. The ground that is not occupied by the tank is mostly down to grass.
The planning permission granted is for an extremely interesting two storey house essentially built within the tank, it has been carefully designed for maximum day light. The design results in a spacious house over two floors. On the lower ground floor there are five double bedrooms all en-suite together with a lounge. The upper floor is largely open plan with a living room, kitchen, dining room and w.c. Further architects drawings of the proposed development are available from the auctioneers.

Architecturally Unique
Please note, each week we feature the work of a unique architect. These properties are NOT currently for sale, but are included to help inspire readers as to the talent that abounds when a good architect’s mind meets the imagination of a unique property person, and something that little bit special is created by the synergy.
This Bulletin’s listing of a water tank conversion at Amilaird as illustrated immediately above is materially important to many of our readers who are seeking research, assistance and especially architectural guidance on both design and the granting of planning permission for converting these sorts of unusual structure to unique homes. A fine example of the work of our current commended unique architect is Kilphin Water Tower Conversion
