We are looking to assemble a group of six people to buy elements of “Lot 3”. Once we have the full complement of six folk, we can then put together the appropriate paperwork and arrange for a bid to buy the WHOLE of “Lot 3”. This equates to approximately 43% of Tanera Mór Island. To date, we have four of these six parts now with firm buyers from our group. As soon as we have six buyers assembled for “Lot 3” we can then arrange for the solicitors to make the offer for this section of the island.

It is highly recommendable to visit before diving into a project of this nature. We absolutely and utterly love island life, but it isn’t for everyone. So you really need to go across to the island and view the houses first.

General Background: Tanera Mór Island was placed for sale in 2013 for £2,500,000. In 2014 the price was reduced to £1,950,000 for the whole island (here). At the rarefied price of almost two million pounds, millionaire buyers were few and far between.

In 2015, Unique Property Bulletin proposed assembling a group of 9 to 15 like minded people to buy the whole island. This was to be via individual houses sales with a couple of acres of land attached to each (and the communal ownership of the the rest of the island). The logic being that there were many more folk around that can buy a detached island house for around £216,000 as opposed to one person/organisation to purchase the entire island at £1,950,000.

With the individual house sale initiative, we pretty much got halfway towards that total, but 9 houses and six smaller elements – on a remote, albeit magnificently beautiful island. However, even from our sizeable 40,000 readership, this was a big ask.

Fortunately, this earlier effort does not appear to have been lost on the owner’s nor the estate agents. We have been delighted at their recent counter proposal to split the island title deeds into three more financially digestible sections. Looking for thousandaires is likely to prove more productive than reticent millionaires. Since our last effort to assemble 9 to 15 individual island house/building/islet buyers, we have lost some of the earlier group (they went on to buy other property elsewhere). But we still have a core number, and also believe that the principle of individual house ownership is a pragmatic and viable way to secure what is, by any measure a unique place to live and visit – an exquisitely located and picturesque island.

With this new arrangement – the owner’s selling the island in three parts – real progress is being made. For our onward distillation of individual houses from “Lot 3”, we now have two firm buyers for two of the four houses available to buy; plus two additional buyers – one for the small islet and one buyer for the pier workshop in place. This means we are game-on to give this island project another go. Will you consider joining in? Because members of our group have already visited and inspected specific property in the “Lot 3” section, we are focussing on that area first. However, the other house buyer is flexible, seeking a non specific buy-to-let property on the island.
