Z Castle

Castle Kilmartin 1

Kilmartin Castle, Argyll (c) 2014 Knight Frank

Did you guess correctly ? Our front page headline photo is the kitchen of a fine castle, not a cave’s culinary contribution.

For those readers of a certain age, the instantly recognisable theme from Z-Cars may come to mind. However, this Z-Castle is a different thing altogether. A Z-plan castle has a strong central square/rectangular accommodation element, with small towers attached at diagonally opposite corners. Kilmartin Castle is of the Z-plan ilk. This week’s first listing is for the large section of our readers who keenly email for castles. We are doing the best we can to oblige and make sure the whole of the UK is checked, so we can list and share details of the various castles either available now, or coming up for sale soon.

Kilmartin Castle is recently restored, and without seeming too trite, is a very large amount of home for the money – much more than can be bought for the same amount within the M25. Indeed a one bed flat in a shared block is about the price equivalent of this magnificent, and ancient building. Basically you pay your money and take your choice.

 Castle Kilmartin 2

Kilmartin Castle, Argyll (c) 2014 Knight Frank

Agency Summary: Kilmartin Castle – 3 Bedrooms; 2 Reception Rooms; 3 Bathrooms; Approximately 257.1 sqm; Listed; Around 1.00 acres (0.4 hectares) of Grounds.

 Castle Kilmartin 4

 Dining – 16th Century Style (c) 2014 Knight Frank

Agency Description: Kilmartin Castle is a semi-fortified, late 16th c. residence and has a private situation to the north of the small Argyll village of Kilmartin, with excellent views of the surrounding countryside.

It was built as a variation of the popular Z-plan, consisting of a main block lying north and south, with round towers projecting from the south-west and north-east corners. A small secondary stair-tower rises part way along the west front. The SW tower contains the main stair with a service stair contained in a semi-circular projection from the hall. The other tower contains a series of bathrooms.

 Castle Kilmartin 5

Upstairs Has Castle Comforts (c) 2014 Knight Frank

The entrance leads into a vaulted passage which links the main stair to the kitchen, dining room and store which are all vaulted. On the first floor there is the great hall and a bedroom with en suite bathroom. On the upper floor are two further bedrooms with en suite facilities.

Kilmartin Castle is approached over a gravel driveway which ends in a large parking and turning area at the front of the castle. There are large sweeping lawns flanked by mature conifer trees.

Location: Kilmartin Castle, Castle Park, Kilmartin, Lochgilphead, Argyll, PA31 8RQ.

Tenure: Feuhold [Scottish Freehold Equivalent].

Heartbeat II ?

Police Station Warrington Road

Former Police Station, Ince, Wigan (c) 2014 Eddisons

For some reason we have had many emails looking to buy a former police station – even from television companies. Must be a new series of The Bill or Heartbeat on the way! The thing is, out of 11 police stations recently listed in London, all are now “under offer”. There is definitely some form of movement in the property market. Here is hoping that it is gentle – no more boom and bust. Too much of a shock to the system.

Anyways, here we have a modest police station for sale in Wigan.

Agency Summary: Redevelopment/refurbishment opportunity. Former police station plus rear garage and store. Potential for redevelopment subject to obtaining the necessary planning consents. Approximately 6125sqft / 569.01sqm.

 Police Station Warrington Road Pugh

Former Police Station, Ince, Wigan (c) 2014 Pugh & Co

This property was previously listed at the Roy Pugh Auction on 10 July 2012 but Failed To Sell At Auction – FTSAA.

Earlier – FTSAA – Failed To Sell At Auction Listing

The clear thing is, given the time this building has remained empty and for sale, there may be a margin of flexibility in the sale price. The seller can always say “no”. On the other hand if you have a very cheeky offer under the £100,000 mark, and the answer is a “yes”, then that may very well be a good buy.

Location: Former Police Station, 492 Warrington Road, Ince, Wigan, WN3 4TB

Tenure: Long Leasehold – Leasehold for the residue of the term of 999 years from 1 November 1889, subject to a yearly rent of £16.89.

Guide: £150,000.

Unique Property Bulletin

Apologies, but our current operating system only allows 100 emails to be sent out at a time. This means at present, we unable to offer a facility to send an email reminder weblink to each of the 31,000 readers. This would take about 3 hours to manage each week. The Unique Property Bulletin website is entirely free for readers and run by volunteers – we simply don’t have the resources to email direct URL weblinks at this time. Sorry. It is a frustrating situation which we hope to remedy during the year. So for now, we would ask readers to help by proactively …

Architecturally Unique

Sodae House 1

Sodae House Design – Neat Moat Bridge ! (c) 2014 VMX Architects

This unique architecture is not currently for sale, but as with this section of the Unique Property Bulletin, it is nice to illustrate the work of different and creative architects’ minds. It is also a way to locate an architect with like-minded projects to the one that chimes with your own particular dream design of a unique home.

Narrative: In a nature area between Amsterdam, Amstelveen and Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, lies the Kostverlorenkade 1; an island measuring 1200m2. Here, VMX build a 500m2 house. The starting point for the concept was the perception of the landscape, the distant high buildings of the Zuid As and the Rembrandt Tower as well as the view of the aeroplanes travelling to and from Schiphol.

Sodae House – Photograph Montage

Sodae House 2

Sodae House Design (c) 2014 VMX Architects

The living room and kitchen are arranged in a loft-like space on the first floor. The more intimate areas (bedrooms and bathrooms) are situated on the ground floor, orientated towards the garden on the backside. The basement contains an additional programme such as a fitness room and a home cinema. The house forms an object in the landscape; the island acts as the plinth.

Nominated for the Gouden A.A.P. 2010 (Amsterdam.Architecture.Prize.)

Try Before You Buy …..

Mill For A Magic Moment

As is usually the case – property included within the try-before-you-buy section of the Unique Property Bulletin – is NOT for sale. Our endeavour is to provide a sample, and actual experience of what it would be like to live in any particular genre of unusual abode for our readers to possibly call home in the future. This specific listing is for a short-stay break.

Brinkburn Mill MAIN

Brinkburn Mill, Rothbury, Northumberland (c) 2014 The Landmark Trust

Next to the River Coquet in a quiet wooded valley is Brinkburn Mill, wheel and grinding stones still in place as a reminder of an earlier age. This feels a remote location but Brinkburn Priory is just over the garden wall and the beaches and Northumbrian castles are only a few miles away.

Brinkburn Mill N Shuttleworth

Brinkburn Mill, Northumberland (c) 2014 Landmark Trust / N. Shuttleworth

The present mill lies at the end of a long lawn, looking back towards the pretty Gothick manor house that stands beside the soaring priory church. This mill was built in about 1800 near the site of its medieval predecessor, but was later dressed up to improve the view from the house. The wheel and grinding stones are still here, although long unused. At the upper end of the mill, and previously separate from it, are two grander rooms. These may have been an office or perhaps a fishing lodge. One is now the sitting-room, with tall windows facing east to catch the morning sun.

Location: Brinkburn Mill, Longframlington, Rothbury, Morpeth, Northumberland, NE65 8AR [postcode/satnav is approximate].

Tenure: Short Term Holiday Stay.

Guide: Sleeps 4 – 4 nights from £262.00 – equivalent to £16.38 per person per night

Availability: Brinkburn Mill Availability
