This Edition’s Unique Property Feature:-
Private Islands For Sale or Rent
Go Get ‘Em Tiger
ISLANDS FOR SALE
Tanera Mór Island & Several Houses (c) 2015 Savills
It has been a while since we visited the ever popular ideal idyll of a private island home. Recently £500,000 has been lopped off of the price tag of a UK island paradise, and on another, bigger island, a sublime property has had a beaming £100,000 clipped from the guide price. So it appears an interesting time to revisit the subject.
AND ISLANDS FOR RENT
Towan Island, Newquay, Cornwall, TR7 1EA
Normally islands, especially private islands are the stuff of dreams, but in real life we can, and have made it happen for just a few pounds ~ really!
Though currently, to buy an island can cost over a million pounds. Just read the new Islands For Sale or Rent webpage linked at the foot of this Bulletin page. Notwithstanding that fact, with ingenuity and lateral thinking, we can bring the cost of an island home down to around the £195,000 mark. So whether it is £1 or £195,000 or £1,500,000 for an island home, our mantra is – if we dinosaurs can manage this, then you have a good chance too.
To help those with an island dream, this edition includes a modest feature article about islands below, plus a new, dedicated Islands For Sale or Rent webpage to give those who have a heartfelt yearning either to try or to buy an island and experience that lifestyle some food for thought.

Also in the main Bulletin listings that now follow, we have a couple of properties that are located on a more populous but equally unique island to study.

Economic Engine House?
The Old Engine House, Winsor Lane, Kelly Bray, Callington, Cornwall. PL17 8EW

Definitely a doer upper. Not sure how much money is needed to fuel-up this old engine house, plus any planning hurdles that need to be navigated. But at the nominal price of £10,000 has to be worth a look? Surely?
Auctioneer’s Narrative: Approximately 0.93 hectares (2.31 acres) of amenity land in a pleasant tucked away position on the rural outskirts of the village. Repleat with the historical components from a bygone mining industry including the former engine house and a water in-filled mine opening creating an attractive pond-like feature.

UKWMO Nuclear Bunker
UKWMO Roding Valley, Off High Road, Chigwell, Essex, IG7 6BL
UKWMO Roding Valley, Above Ground Site Appearance
We seem to be on a seam of these former underground bunkers recently. Here is an ROC UKWMO post at Chigwell in Essex. Interestingly this one has a half decent fence and gate around it. These structures are very popular with many Bulletin readers. Possibly those who are of the armageddon-outta-here school of thought.
PLEASE NOTE THE ACTUAL BUNKER IS IN NEED OF CONSIDERABLE RESTORATION WORK.

Unique Property Bulletin Fundraiser: Not-For-Profit Website
Our annual fundraiser for the website hosting fees – which are now several hundred pounds – went online two weeks ago. It is humbling that so many readers have contributed.
We are now 70% towards the target.
So still time to pop a few pounds across – with much appreciation from the volunteers at this end. Even just a £2 for the year will go a long way. £5 would help us get the bill paid quicker, and £10 would make you a star in our books. As for the 3 Bulletin readers that have each sent £25 across – this just knocked us six foot sideways – in a good way. Genuine heartfelt thanks for that. Remember this donation is for a WHOLE YEAR of Bulletins. Just press our “Donate” button and the Paypal system will take you through the rest…

Lighthouse Homes Alighted
By A Bright Reduction of £100,000
Douglas Lighthouse Cottages, Isle of Man
Recent price reduction of £100,000 to £399,950.
The above photograph is one of our favourites from the past four years of the Unique Property Bulletin online, if not one of the best of our 25 years at this publication. Douglas Lighthouse Cottages are such a sublime and picturesque place to live. Okay, the guy who stays in the next lighthouse along is a bit of a motoring fanatic from Top Gear, but he keeps himself to himself prety much most of the time.
As for Douglas Lighthouse Cottages – Some lucky reader has possibly just saved £100,000 given the price reduction this week on their fabulous next home.

Courting Again
Former Selby Magistrates Court, New Lane, Selby.
The last court we listed had a lot of folk view our online weblink. Not sure why courts hold such an avid interest, but this court caught our eye. So for readers who like court [that sounds a bit iffy] here is another one. It is a handsome building, and again a lot of bricks and mortar for little money.
Please let us know how you get on if your paw goes in the air at the auction and remains there at the fall of the gavel.
Agency Narrative: A detached three storey former magistrates court, comprising a mixture of meeting rooms, offices and cells at ground floor level. Courts are at first floor level together with additional meeting rooms and facilities, with further meeting rooms and facilities located on the second floor. There is lift access (not tested) to first floor level. If, subject to planning consents etc., you were to make this either your new dwelling, or even a home/office then it could be a very interesting place to live with some nice wood panelling in the old court section to incorporate into your own new venture.
Guide: £100,000

James Bond & Skyfall
Former Port of London Authority HQ & 007 Building
Well we do promise to cover all areas and all price ranges. Heaven knows what the guide is on this magnificent edifice. Were it located in any part of Britain it would command a pretty penny, but as it is located in one of the most expensive real estate locations in the world, then your guess is as good as ours. Suffice it to say, just the look of this handsome building captured our eye.
10 Trinity Square is a Grade II listed building and was opened by Prime Minister David Lloyd George in 1922.

+++++++
Whilst in the vernacular of 10 Trinity Square and the James Bond frachise, a little extra is added to this Bulletin as we love Judi Dench. When Dame Judi then quotes Tennyson’s Ulysses, what’s not to like and respect. Especially if you get the swansong she alludes to, interwoven with the words spoken and the destination we all head towards, and how it may be approached…
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will;
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Unique Property Competition
Total Prize Fund £220
We have been moved, almost beyond words at the generosity of our annual fundraising effort for the Bulletin’s burgeoning webhosting fees. But in the past few days one of our regular readers has said we need to boost the competition prize from a measly £20. She has taken out a photo-box-ad for a year on the condition we put those funds towards a more handsome prize. So here goes with the new enhanced Unique Property Bulletin competition.
For May + June 2015, the Unique Property Bulletin competition prize is different than normal. First we have a modest prize of:-
A £20 Prize For The Winner Who Identifies This Waterside Location...
Wet Wreck or Waterside Winner?
A second, and additional separate prize draw of £200 To The Winner Who Identifies The Owner of this derelict utilitarian structure -with a lot of potential subject to planning permission and a magician of an architect. C’mon, get your property sleuthing brain into gear…
The winner of either/both prizes is the first drawn from our Competition Box on 30th June 2015.

Try Before You Buy
The property included within the try-before-you-buy section of the Unique Property Bulletin – is NOT for sale. Our endeavour is to provide a sample, and actual experience of what it would be like to live in any particular genre of unusual abode. This specific listing is for a short-stay break. Our offering for this edition is:-
Your Carriage Awaits
Classic Railway Holiday Experience
Rail Holidays: Haparanda Station, St Germans, Saltash, Cornwall, PL12 5LU
A lovely triumvirate of three classes of accommodation this holiday experience gives an indication of what railway rolling stock living might be like
Here at the Bulletin we actually bid on a real railway bridge (decommissioned) with the idea of placing an old static steam engine and some restored railway coaches on the disused bridge structure for either an unusual home, or possibly an unusual style of restaurant experience. We got outbid by £10,000. Still wonder what if the bid had won through on that old bridge.
Anyways, here we have a nice example that you can holiday at, with English gold and Italian velvet in the first class bedroom and bespoke triple bunk beds in the guard’s room. Mevy does not have a trackside location, but instead looks out to the river and rolling hills beyond.

Unique Property Bulletin Main Article
This Edition’s Feature
Unique Islands For Sale Or Rent
Go Get ‘Em Tiger
Simple Island Pleasures
Where It Really Started: The Idyllic Harbour, Corrie, Isle of Arran (c) Trevor Littlewood
This edition is a little unusual. Mainly because the feature is a webpage we are adding to the Unique Property Bulletin website, dedicated to:-
Islands For Sale or Rent
We will post the link in a moment or two. However, the preface to that webpage on islands is possibly worth looking at here in a few words. The reason is in the subtitle:
Go Get ‘Em Tiger
It IS possible for you to have an island life for relatively little money if you do your homework, plus good fortune lends a hand. Whilst I was lucky to live the formative years on a bigger island – Arran – anyone who looks at this picturesque setting, or even the inspiration from the smaller private island – Holy Isle in Lamlash Bay, Arran might find something of interest in this week’s feature and/or the additional Islands For Sale or Rent webpage.
Holy Island By Arran (c) LJ Cunningham
It is difficult not to get the island bug! The picture immediately above of Holy Isle which is the smaller neighbour of the larger and magnificent Island of Arran…
The Island of Arran (c) Rob Farrow
If you are, or become lucky enough to live on an island – big or small – it then seeps into your DNA. Hence the next island, first viewed from the west coast of Arran – Blackwaterfoot and the pretty harbour…
Blackwaterfoot Harbour, Isle of Arran: Departing Point For Davaar Island

…via boat – another excuse to acquire an unusual mode of transport to your new home via Arran sailing across the Kilbrannan Sound. Our jump across this beautiful stretch of water led us to an island called Davaar…
Davaar Island. Lease of Coastguard Building £1 A Year
Photograph Courtesy & Copyright: Steve Partridge
The lease on the Old Lookout/Coastguard Station pictured above was just one pound a year. Yes that is correct, the first five year lease was of an old coastguard station at around ONE POUND a year. The catch? Well it wasn’t really a catch, but an opportunity for a lot of fun. The Old Coastguard Station/Lookout needed new windows and a significant refurbishment. But just look at the view, which can be appreciated from both the photograph immediately above, and the one below…
Davaar Island: The Old Lookout/Coastguard Station PRIOR To Renovation (c) 1984 Russ McLean
What followed was a great deal of enjoyment, and education on how to meet the challenges of small island life. Not that far removed from the Castaway experience of Taransay Island, and the resultant television series [in fact the television production company came across to visit us on Ailsa Craig to shortlist it as a possible candidate in pre-commission of the Castaway series]
Back to Argyll: the owner of the otherwise uninhabited Davaar Island Lookout/Coastguard Station, went on to grant a lease to us for the empty house that the former lighthouse keeper used to live in such was the success of the coastguard station refurbishment. This adjacent and very unique abode was sublime as you might see and possibly agree…
Davaar Island. Lighthouse Keeper’s Home With Views To The Isle of Arran & Blackwaterfoot Harbour From Whence We Sailed

Happy days on Davaar Island. The trick here, with all this island living is to be proactive and not reactive when looking for this type of unique property. Hence our subtext on this feature: Go Get ‘Em Tiger. To press the point, perhaps carpe diem as the diems aren’t that manius and those that are can be very raptim! More of this on our main islands page weblinked below. Before going to that new webpage, we must mention the graduation from leasing a place on Davaar Island to purchasing the main buildings, pier, railway and outbuildings on Ailsa Craig Island, as this may illustrate a path that you might like to consider – from leasing to owning….
Ailsa Craig Island (c) Johnny Durnan
On closer inspection, and from a good vantage point, giving a decent idea of what is on Ailsa Craig Island by way of accommodation, land and buildings…
The Actual Buildings: Ailsa Craig Island Lighthouse Compound, Railway & Pier
Our Mantra: If We Can Do This, You Have A Good Chance Too
The main caveat is whether you LIKE living on an island.
Which is why we always recommend you rent or lease a place on an island first to see if you like it.
Anyways, enough of this preface, and onto the main webpage we have just created:-
