This Edition’s Unique Property Feature:-
London Enigma
Daniel Craig Standing On Your London Rooftop
007 Looking At Other’s Iconic London Landmark’s Coming Up For Sale
For decades we have been listing unusual property in London, but no matter whether it is property-boom time, or property-bust, London real-estate sales keep on rolling along, inexorably, like Paul Robeson’s iconic “Old Man River”.
That presents us with a London enigma which causes many folk a problem. For our own small efforts, by the time we feature a capital property, maybe only a few days pass – 7 to 10 maximum – and the thing is often “under offer”. Thereby rendering redundant our efforts to keep a decent presence of unique properties from London featured in the Bulletin.
However we have a cunning plan to remedy this…

Thinking Inside The Box
Shipping Container Homes Made Economically Neutral

Further Details Click Here
An email landed in our inbox with some information from a Bulletin reader about converted shipping-containers as a place to live. This is briefly shared here at this segment. We are intending to explore shipping-container life in greater detail with a dedicated feature article towards the end of this year. However, for now we include a few interesting snippets surrounding what is, by many accounts, a very economic way to live. For some folk, this is actually a lifeline with other avenues for a roof over the head exhausted. For some, ship-container-living is a deliberate choice of minimalism. For others who follow the philosophy of enough, similar to the Good Life – where enjoyment of being is almost at a Zen like state or existence.
Enter the shipping-container. At its most basic, hardly the most elegant of structures. Though plentiful in the extreme, and available almost anywhere. With second hand prices starting at £500 or $1,000 (for the basic container shell). Importantly for some locations, by definition, the shipping container can be transported to almost anywhere on the planet.
So as a place to consider living, when needs must, or lifestyle desire implores, then we have a very interesting potential abode to study…

BT Repeater Station & Planning???
Telephone Repeater Station, Near Tadcaster, North Yorkshire
Each Unique Property Bulletin starts an edition by listing at the economical end of the house spectrum and work upwards; sometimes to the near-astronomical! So for this Bulletin, after a £500 starting price shipping container conversion idea, we gently ease into the unusual property arena with a former telephone repeater station. Also within the affordable home ballpark.
This detached former telecoms structure occupies a piece of land around a quarter of an acre. Located on the main A64 York to Leeds Road near Catterton. Essentially a single storey brick building with an approximate net internal floor area of 95m2 (1,022 sq.ft).
For Bulletin readers, we need to highlight that a planning application for domestic use was previously refused, and anyone considering this building should be very knowledgeable in planning permission negotiations, or game-on to start a steep learning experience. To help start the process, here we have the confirmation and source of the initial blockage…
2014/0121/OUT – 8/76/13/PA – Outline application with all matters reserved for demolition of existing repeater station and erection of 2 No 4 bedroom detached dwellings at Tadcaster Telephone Repeater Station – REFUSED
Source: Click Here – Selby Council Planning Dept
Here’s the thing, it might be worthwhile devoting a few moments of lateral-thought time on how planning permission to use this former BT building as a residential unit might be obtained? Ingenious ways to persuade planning officials as to how empty buildings can be brought back to useful and viable life are there. It just takes a little time to cogitate and come up with a viable proposal.
We have our own ideas and will pop them into a feature article in due course. If you have any views on overcoming planning permission hurdles that might help everyone who partakes in the Bulletin, please feel free to

Hot Bargain
Former Fire Station, Knowsley Lane, Knowsley, Liverpool
The price is definitely low for this former fire station, but by the looks of what is left, there is a mountain of work. Whatever else, if you find a fireman’s pole to slide down in this pile of bricks, maybe give that a miss, for it’ll be that rusty you would get friction burns in all the wrong places.

Life After Nuclear Doom
From Armageddon Bunker To Elegant Glass House
BEFORE CONVERSION
South East London Regional War Rooms, Chiselhurst
In 1951 at the growing Cold War and prospect of nuclear Armageddon, the UK government started to build secret bunkers. The larger buildings were those from whence officials could run the country in the event of a nuclear attack.
AFTER CONVERSION
The Glasshouse, Kemnal Road, Chislehurst
The before and after photographs above show the South East London Regional War Rooms. These give a good idea of what near derelict government structures looked like before some imagination, dedication, and a whole heap of hard work is sprinkled upon them. Even if this particular unique building conversion is not for you, at least it gives a good idea what can be done. If this sort of project light’s your fire, maybe check out the before and after websites linked below.

Try Before You Buy
The property included within the try-before-you-buy section of the Unique Property Bulletin – is NOT for sale. Our endeavour is to provide a sample, and actual experience of what it would be like to live in any particular genre of unusual abode. This specific listing is for a short-stay break. Our offering for this edition:-
Staying In A Railway Station
Old Tavistock Railway Station, Quant Park, Tavistock, Devon
This Bulletin has an literal try-before-you-buy. Normally this section’s suggestion is to have a taste – and some fun – with an unusual property by holidaying or renting it for a while rather than buy. To appreciate the design, detail and endeavour that goes into a unique property conversion/restoration project prior to embarking on what is often the significant and sizeable endeavour of jumping straight in and buying a unique home.
Unusually, and for this edition, we have a try-before-you-buy of a property that is also for sale (as illustrated earlier in this Bulletin).
There are also very good 360 degree views and visual tours of various elements at Old Tavistock Railway Station. Please remember to click on the drop-down menu at the top right hand corner to look at the full selection of different parts of this former railway station.

Container City: Early Modular Project

Developer’s Website: www.containercity.com
Even though we are going to run a feature article on shipping container homes later this year, we can’t contain our enthusiasm for these amazing full sized real life Lego building blocks. So this Bulletin we have a couple of interesting sipping-container based designs. The first, as pictured above is devised by Urban Space Management Ltd., with architect Nicholas Lacey. They have a trademarked project called Container City™. This development re-uses shipping-containers linked together to provide high strength, prefabricated steel modules that can be combined to create a wide variety of building shapes and can be adapted to suit most planning or end user needs.

Fascinating Time lapse Build: Click Here
This modular technology enables construction time to be reduced by up to half those of traditional building techniques while minimalising on site disruption and remaining significantly more environmentally friendly.
From the urban, city scape, we move to the rural environment with a significant change of tenor. A tranquil place that many would happily consider calling home. Urban Space Management Ltd., have basically used 6 shipping-containers at £500 to £1,000 each to create this lovely home…
Container City: Cove Park Project
Of course there are a lot of other costs above the core £3,000 to £6,000 container shell – land prices, planning fees, building control, build and conversion costs. But what a delightful place to live.
You can still see a little of the old container “Z” panel [ Click Here ] within the construct, but a characterful circular window just makes the simple shipping-container something much greater than it’s original relatively mundane purpose.
Container City: Cove Park Project
To date Urban Space Management Ltd has successfully used the Container City™ system to create classrooms, office space, sports halls, nurseries, community centres, artist studios, retail space, live / work space, sound recording studios and a General Practice. This low cost approach to building has been commended by both Government and Private Sectors for its design and the economical way in which it recycles industrial products. Further details:-

This Edition’s Unique Property Feature:-
London Enigma
Admiralty Arch, The Mall, London, SW1A 2WH
One of Several Iconic & Unique London Capital Properties For Sale/Sold
Photograph Courtesy of Colin Smith
So what is our cunning plan – London Enigma – to help Bulletin readers looking to buy unique property in the Capital?
Well, the pool of buyers for mighty landmark’s such as Admiralty Arch are fairly rarefied given the likely £60,000,000 buy-in to £110,000,000 full refurbishment price tag. However, whoever buys massive buildings such as this are often developers looking to split the very large structure into many bite-sized apartment – or even hotel rooms. These smaller places to live and dwell are, in the future, likely to come up for resale/rental as the major project is divided into more affordable parts. Well “affordable” by London standards – still eye-watering for those outwith the M25 ring of planetary price heights.
So our recommended advice for this Unique Property Bulletin is one way to find a unique property to buy in London..
Look at the seriously big unique building projects that come up for sale. Then pro-actively approach the developer and see if it may be possible to buy off-plan. After your due diligence, legal advice, conveyancing questions etc.
The Admiralty Arch is likely to become a hotel, and we shall cover that logistic in a later Bulletin – but the principle of larger projects being redeveloped into smaller, more manageable units is sound.
Admiralty Arch, The Mall, London, SW1A 2WH
Photograph Courtesy of Andrew Cusack & Savills
Whichever London landmark you are curious about find out the owner and keep in touch with them. Particularly if looks like their plans are to sell prospective, but as of yet, undeveloped apartments within any given major London property acquisition.
Hopefully this lateral thought process makes sense. For our part it is one way in which we can highlight amazing London property that is coming up for sale, without having the property go off market before we can share the details with our friends and colleagues who read Unique Property Bulletin.
If you are looking for an unusual place to stay in London and the examples here tweak your interest it is worth noting that the current UK Government are looking to sell of a number of genuinely unique, indeed iconic London properties. The Admiralty Arch is just one of them. It will be a prestigious address, even by London standards. Just look through the main gate to see who your neighbours is…

Not that you are likely to be popping across the way to borrow a cup of sugar from your new neighbour H.M. Queen Elizabeth, but the view along The Mall is undoubtedly and literally spectacular. Especially at various key events when the whole nine yards of colour and pageantry literally roll through the doors under your new flat, or London hotel room.

The current “sold” status has yet to be confirmed, but please note, our aim at the Bulletin for this feature article is to locate substantial and unique London property that may well be purchased by a large developer for conversion to smaller flats, that in turn can then be studied by our readers for possible purchase.
